SPLIT - A divided America

NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION

You paid for it. You should read it.
We, American taxpayers, spent over $100 million dollars last year to fund an independent
think tank that provides reports to Members of Congress on a wide range of issues that
materially affect our lives every day - State Healthcare Regulation, the Food and Drug
Administration, Casualties in Iraq and the Regulating of Ballast Water Discharges. Get
what you paid for and download these informative, thorough reports on issues of prime
concern to America.

One Man One Vote? Kind of. But Not Really.
On the first Tuesday in November, we cast a vote for President of the United States. Or
do we? Not really, it turns out. When we vote for a President and Vice President, we
actually vote for presidential electors, known collectively as the electoral college. Even
though they are pledged to vote for the candidates they represent, they are not actually
legally bound to do so. This report lays out the reality of ‘one man one vote’ in our
country.

The Never Ending Story
The longest and costliest presidential campaign in our nation's history. Is it in our
national best interest to have elected officials out on the campaign trail for over two years
when running for higher office? Is spending nearly 5 billion dollars in the process the
best way of investing our national treasure in these economically challenged times? This
congressionally funded report takes a good hard look at the way we pick a president.

Finding the Facts
In an era dominated by spin and opinion, the nonpartisan Pew Research Center stands out
as the most widely respected 'fact tank' in the United States today. The Center provides
information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America. It only reports finding
and does not take positions on policy issues - it really is "just the facts."

Polls, Polls and More Polls.
The race for the white house is neck and neck and it looks to be that way through election
day. One of the best places on the web for polling information that gives an up to the
minute snapshot of the electorate is Rasmussen Reports. The non-partisan lens it employs
in investigating the nation’s thoughts and feelings have given it broad bi-partisan appeal - it is one of the few political sites to attract roughly equal numbers of Republicans, Democrats, and unaffiliated voters.

Dollars and Sense.
$7 million dollars in one day. That's what the Mccain Campaign collected after the
announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Barack Obama, the most effective
fundraiser this country has ever seen, is expected to raise and spend over 400 million
before all is said and done in November. So this begs the question..... where is all this
money coming from? Fundrace offers the dollars and sense of campaign contributions.
Insightful, to say the least.
